Roommates, it’s officially been 20 years since one of the best dance movies ever, “Save The Last Dance“, was released! Back in 2001, fans flocked to movie theaters to see “Save The Last Dance” and quickly made it an instant classic.
There are movies that you enjoy and movies that always have a special place in your heart—and for many, “Save The Last Dance” is that movie. It had lots of dancing of course, but there was also a love triangle, racial tensions, the loss of a parent, a minor gang rivalry and more.
Made during Julia Stiles’ string of successful teen films (including the hit “10 Things I Hate About You” with Heath Ledger,) “Save The Last Dance” centered around her character Sara attending an inner city Chicago high school, where she naturally finds love with a smart Black male student (played by Sean Patrick Thomas) who teaches her how dance and shed some of her uptight ballerina demeanor. However, it’s also notable for being the film that brought Kerry Washington to the entertainment mainstream.
The film spent two weeks at the top of the box office and quickly became a fan favorite with quotable lines and iconic dance scenes.
Julia and Sean won an MTV Movie Award for Best Kiss and she also won for Best Female Performance, while her heated altercation with Nikki (played by the ageless Bianca Lawson) racked up a Teen Choice Award for Best Fight.
It’s hard to believe it’s been 20 years, but it still feels like the first time we saw it. Happy 20th Anniversary!
