Sandra Bland’s Family Settles For $1.9 Million In Wrongful Death Suit

It has been a little over a year since the wrongful death of Sandra Bland.

Back in July 2015, she was pulled over and arrested for failing to use her signal. Three days later Bland was found dead in her jail cell. Authorities ruled her death a suicide although close friends and family said she would never take her own life.

Her death influenced protests throughout the country as many believe that her arrest was uncalled for.

According to CNN, the family of Sandra Bland reached a settlement of $1.9 million in her wrongful death lawsuit.

The settlement was announced on Thursday morning, as details were finalized on Wednesday.

Some of the new jail procedures that have been included in the settlement include, using automated electronic sensors to ensure timely cell checks. As well as providing an on-duty staff nurse or emergency medical technician for all shifts.

The same day that the autopsy results were revealed, CNN got a hold of reports showing that guards violated policies by failing to do the required timely checks on the inmates.

State Trooper Brian Encinia, who arrested Bland, was fired after he was indicated on a perjury charge.
