Roseanne Barr recently shared that she wants Lizzo to “thank” her for “paving the way,” though the internet largely disagrees!
The matter emerged earlier this week, and Roseanne got the ball rollin’ with an Instagram upload.
The post specifically highlighted photos from her Feb. 1994 Vanity Fair profile, which showed Barr sprawled out while posing in some lingerie.
Notably, the Vanity Fair feature in question went down during the run of Roseanne, which wrapped in 1998 before briefly returning in 2018. However—due to racist tweets from Barr—the sitcom was canned. Roseanne’s titular character was ultimately killed off, and the remaining cast members starred in The Conners.
Beneath the risqué throwback, Roseanne confidently inquired, “When is @lizzobeeating going to thank me for paving the way[?]”
As Lizzo has garnered tons of attention for embracing and advocating for body positivity over the years, it appears as though Roseanne wanted her flowers for representing thicker body types back in the day.
As people began to catch wind of Roseanne Barr’s post, they shared their thoughts online.
Largely, people disagreed that Lizzo owed Roseanne any gratitude. Notably, one user dismissed Barr’s proclamation while acknowledging that Missy Elliott “was the blueprint.”
Similarly, another individual pointed out that, when it comes to trailblazing, “Queen Latifah among several other Black female artists” are more deserving of a shoutout.
While pushing back against Roseanne Barr’s post, a user stated, “When one thinks of Lizzo, absolutely no one thinks of Roseanne paving any roads for her.” Oop!
All in all, it looks like most people didn’t see the correlation and were unsupportive of Roseanne’s statement.
Roomies, what do you think about Roseanne Barr proclaiming she “paved the way” for Lizzo?
