It looks like the story of legendary hip-hop label Roca-A-Fella Records will be coming to our television screens in the near future.
According to Deadline, Dame Dash and executive producer Lemuel Plummer are working to bring the behind the scenes story of the famed record label to life.
Founded in 1996 by Dame Dash, Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter and Kareem Burke , the label went on to be the home of other artists such as Kanye West, Beanie Sigel, Cam’ron and many others.
The series will explore the rise of the label, which released Jay-Z’s classic debut album Reasonable Doubt, back in 1996. And the importance of the label to hip-hop culture, which included an expansion into both fashion and film. Not to mention the start of the label’s demise when tensions started to arise.
Dash said, “My experience is colorless. The reason why Roc-A-Fella crossed and became so essential to pop culture is that we were probably the most authentic people that were also so sophisticated.”
He continued, “My experience doing white people sh*t is just as heavy as my experiences doing black people sh*t. Actually I think I’ve done white people sh*t better than white people.”
Plummer added, “It means a lot that Damon trusts us to tell the story – the true story – of how two global music icons got their start and did nothing less than redefine pop culture. That story is so unbelievable and yet so true that we know we have an awesome responsibility as storytellers to get things right.”
Roommates will this be a series that you’re interested in tuning in to?
