Last night, the nonprofit organization Robin Hood New York teamed up with iHeart Radio and held their virtual telethon to raise money to help those who have been affected by the coronavirus within the New York area. The telethon featured some big names including Mariah Carey, Jennifer Lopez, Spike Lee, Alicia Keys, Barbara Streisand, Robert De Niro, and many other A-list celebrities, who lent their voices and talent for the cause.
At the end of the night, it was announced that over $115 million was raised, and all of the celebrities involved offered some type of comfort during this time. Mariah performed a mashup of her songs “Make It Happen,” and “Through The Rain,” and said, “We can make it through this together.”
Robert De Niro also offered some encouraging words to New Yorkers and said, “Our city is under attack, but we’ve been here before. In the last 20 years, both 9/11 and Hurricane Sandy. You can take your best shot but you cannot break our spirit.”
According to Billboard, Robin Hood said all the donations will provide support for food, shelter, cash assistance, mental health, legal services, and education.
Also during the telethon, Michael Strahan, Eli Manning, Phil Simms, and Justin Tuck, who are all former players for the New York Giants, announced a sweepstake where a fan has the chance to win the opportunity to play a game of touch football with them in their own backyard and also get a Super Bowl ring.
As we previously reported, New York City is working to help eliminate the virus anyway possible. Last week, for the first time in 115 years, the NYC Subway system was shut down purposely for deep cleaning.
