Reverend Jesse Jackson On The State of America: “There’s a kind of mean-spirited division in the country.”

The United States just celebrated its 240th Independence Day on Monday only four black men to be unjustly murdered within 48 hours of the celebration. No one is escaping the anger and confusion on social media as we’re all trying to understand what is happening as well as educate those who don’t understand why #BlackLivesMatter.

Among the many celebrities and activists speaking out this week, The Reverend Jesse Jackson visited BBC 4 radio where he explained that there is a division taking place in this country and that the outrage over racial injustices are only “one manifestation of the divide.”

“It’s a kind of anti-black mood, anti-Semitism, anti-Muslim bashing, immigrant bashing, women bashing,” Jackson said. “There’s a kind of mean-spirited division in the country. This is just one manifestation of the divide.”

The activist went on to explain how the country’s political climate is making things worse. “We’ve been used as scapegoats for deeper, I think deeper, cultural and economic fears,” he added. “We’re not the cause of them.”

So the question remains, how do we organize our communities well enough to put an end to racial injustice? How do we educate non-people of color who don’t understand that Black lives don’t really matter in the United States?

Let’s chat, Roommates!
