We all know last month Kim Kardashian turned heads on the Met Gala carpet as she wore Marilyn Monroe’s dress from 1962. While on the carpet Kim shared she had to drop 16 pounds in order to fit the dress. Recently photos of the dress showed some wear and tear, and folks started to accuse Kimmy of destroying the dress.
According to TMZ, reps from Ripley’s spoke out in Kim’s defense and said that she did not destroy the dress. The museum purchased the dress back in 2016 for $4.8 million, and said, “A report written on the dress’s condition in early 2017 states, a number of the seams are pulled and worn. This is not surprising given how delicate the material is. There is puckering at the back by the hooks and eyes,’ among other instances of damage.”
Amanda Joiner, who is Ripley’s VP of Publishing and Licensing, was with Kim the night of the Met Gala and said, “From the bottom of the Met steps, where Kim got into the dress, to the top where it was returned, the dress was in the same condition it started in.”
The photo that has been circulating online was before Ripley’s purchased the dress. The rep also shared that the dress has been displayed around the world, which has contributed to possible damage.
Kim, herself has not spoken out about the dress since she was accused of damaging it.
The dress itself was worn by Monroe in 1962 when she sang Happy Birthday to John F. Kennedy. According to CNN, the dress is currently on display at Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Hollywood through the fall.
