Tiffany Haddish spoke with Variety about turning down the opportunity to host the 2021 Grammys pre-show, and the president of the Recording Academy is now speaking out on her behalf.
Tiffany said she was offered the hosting job for the Recording Academy’s pre-show in January, which will be a 3-hour broadcast. Once she realized she wouldn’t be getting compensated for the job, Tiffany decided that it wasn’t the gig for her. She was also informed that she would have to pay for her own glam squad for the show and she wasn’t here for that at all.
“I don’t know if this might mean I might not get nominated ever again, but I think it’s disrespectful,” Tiffany told Variety.
The Recording Academy responded, saying that the gig is always offered with no pay attached, but President Harvey Mason Jr. took to Instagram to send Tiffany a public apology about the situation.
“Unfortunately and without me knowing, a talent booker working for the academy told Ms. Haddish that we wouldn’t even cover her costs while she hosted this event for us,” Mason said. “That was wrong, I am frustrated by that decision, it was a lapse in judgement, it was in poor taste, and it was disrespectful to the creative community, and it’s not right.”
He continued explaining that he reached out to Tiffany personally, and she did indeed accept his apology.
“Thankfully, Ms. Haddish was gracious enough to allow me to have a conversation with her. I apologize to her personally and I apologize to her from the academy. I express to her my regret and my displeasure with how this went down and how it was handled.”
Tiffany has not spoken publicly in regard to the apology at this time.
