Ex-officer Derek Chauvin has been arrested for the death of George Floyd, as we previously reported, and his mugshot has been released. Chauvin has been charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.
On Friday, Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman’s officially announced the charges.
“It is one officer, Derek Chauvin, is what I was told was the officer that was taken into custody today,” said John Harrington, Minneapolis Department of Pubic Safety Commissioner. “We’ll have more information on the details of this.”
Today’s arrest is a different tune from Thursday. Initially, when asked about forthcoming charges, Attorney Mike Freeman admitted the video was “horrific,” but also stated that “other evidence” did not support a criminal charge and wouldn’t rush the investigation.
Chauvin’s arrest comes after nights of protests in Minneapolis. While some were peaceful, others did include looting, and burning of 3 police precincts. At the moment, it’s unclear of the other officers will be charged for the death of George Floyd, but they were fired.
As previously reported, George Floyd died, during an arrest, on Monday. A 17-year-old filmed the arrest and posted the video, in which it went viral.
