#Roommates, get ready for the ultimate celebration of Juneteenth courtesy of Pharrell Williams and Kenya Barris. According to a new exclusive report, the two are currently in talks to bring a Juneteenth-inspired musical to the popular streaming service Netflix.
@Deadline reports, Pharrell Williams and Kenya Barris are putting their considerable talents together to give us the Juneteenth spectacular we all deserve. The two are reportedly teaming us to develop a feature-length musical about Juneteenth, which is the official commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States.
The project is currently in the very early development stages—and as such, details are being kept tightly under wraps. However, it has been revealed that this project will be entirely separate from the live musical Pharrell and Kenya announced back in 2018. Pharrell is set to produce the new project with partner Mimi Valdes alongside Kenya, who will produce through his production company Khalabo Ink Society.
As you may recall, Pharrell recently traveled back to his home state of Virginia, where he announced with Governor Northam that Juneteenth will be recognized as a paid state holiday for the first time in Virginia history.
As for Kenya, well a few years ago he created the very successful episode of his series “Blackish” that was entirely centered around the history of Juneteenth.
