People Are Outraged At Trump For Use Of Tear Gas On Migrants At U.S.-Mexico Border

The San Diego border crossing was shut down Sunday after hundreds of migrants tried to enter the U.S. and were stopped with tear gas and a blockade of police.

Many woke up this morning to see disturbing images of migrants, including young children, running away and choking on tear gas. Many of these migrants are fleeing the violence in Central America.

Trump has defended his administration’s actions by tweeting today that Mexican officials should ship the thousands of Central American migrants seeking entry into the U.S. back to their countries of origin by any means necessary, according to @NBCNews. A lot of people took to social media to voice their anger and call out Trump, including #Rihanna and #KellyRowland.

Rihanna labeled tear gassing young children “terrorism,” in an #Instagram post and Kelly Rowland said she was disgusted and used her post to talk about the importance of voting in 2020 to “#Getthisclownout.”

Trump claimed that many of the migrants are “stone cold criminals” and told Mexico to send the migrants back to countries such as Guatemala and Honduras by airplane, bus or “anything you want.”

He also threatened to shut down the U.S. southern border “permanently” if needed.

The attempted crossing came after Trump administration officials and members of the Mexico’s incoming government were in disagreement over a deal that could prevent asylum-seekers from entering the United States.

Under the current system, asylum-seekers can remain in the U.S. while their cases are processed in American courts but the Trump administration wants the migrants to remain in Mexico instead.

Last month, Trump ordered about 5,800 troops to the border. He says that number could more than double. Those additional troops joined the 2,000 troops already stationed there, in addition to thousands of border patrol agents.
