Roommates, a Penn State football player wanted nothing more than a win on the field, but on top of that, he received a letter in the mail commenting on his appearance. Not only is said fan not ready to apologize, he says his comments are needed to “Get the guys cleaned up”.
According to TMZ, a man named Dave Peterson wrote a letter to the Penn State Nittany Lions team captain Jonathan Sutherland. In the letter, he congratulates Jonathan for his recent win, but the letter takes a turn when he says Jonathan needs to cut his “disgusting” dreadlocks.
“Don’t you have parents or a girlfriend who’ve told you those shoulder length deadlocks look disgusting and are certainly not attractive,” Peterson writes.
Some of Jonathan’s teammates have come to his defense on Twitter, calling the letter racist, offense, and completely out of line.
Sandy Barbour, Penn State’s Vice President for intercollegiate athletics, has issued a statement in defense of the players saying: “I stand with out Penn State student athletes and appreciate how they represent PSU in competition, in he classroom and in the community. Their dress, tattoos, or hairstyle has no impact on my support, nor does their gender, skin color, sexuality, or religion!”
Peterson, however, is not convinced he did anything wrong. In fact, he stands by what he wrote in the letter, and said he just wants Penn State players to cut their hair.
“I would just like to see the coaches get the guys cleaned up and not looking like Florida State and Miami guys,” he says. “The letter wasn’t threatening or anything. I was just disgruntled about some of the hairdos that we’re seeing.”
