When it hit the internet that N.W.A would be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, fans were ecstatic! But now there’s a bit of bad news leaving fans disappointed –they won’t be performing at their induction.
Say what?!
Yes! So according to Ice Cube, the group will NOT be hitting the stage Friday in Brooklyn.
“Nah, we’re not performing. I guess we really didn’t feel like we were supported enough to do the best show we could put on,” he told New York Times.
He places a majority of the blame on the event organizers.
“We wanted to do it on a whole other level, and that just couldn’t happen. But we’re totally honored, humbled, and appreciative to the Hall for even just considering us, inducting us, and inviting us.”
This comes as a huge surprise seeing as how N.W.A not only took over the box offices and was the lunch pad for older Compton controversy but is only the fifth hip-hop act to be on the receiving end of the award.
Seeing as how they the group is fifth in line to be inducted, Ice Cube made sure to address Gene Simmons’ statements about raps displacement in the Hall of Fame. Cube is a few years late with his comeback but, hey, better late than never, right?
“I respect Gene Simmons, but I think he’s wrong on this, because rock ’n’ roll is not an instrument and it’s not singing. “Rock ’n’ roll is a spirit. N.W.A is probably more rock ’n’ roll than a lot of the people that he thinks belong there over hip-hop. We had the same spirit as punk rock, the same as the blues.”
And that’s straight from the desk of Ice Cube!
Congrats to N.W.A!
Catch them being inducted by Kendrick Lamar on HBO when it airs April 30th!
