Let’s go, Aggies! Former NBA baller and current North Carolina A&T student J.R. Smith has earned another accolade to add to his list of accomplishments! J.R., who is a part of the men’s golf team, has been recently named North Carolina A&T’s Academic “Athlete of the Year,” according to multiple reports.
J.R., pursuing a degree in liberal studies, isn’t only excelling on the golf course. He currently has a 4.0 GPA! I know that, right! The two-time NBA champion who spent 16 years in the league opened up about his new title on Twitter, writing,
“If I’m being honest at all, I was terrified to go back to school. Literally, these assignments still make my heads sweat.” He added, “Overcoming these fears of being vulnerable and open about my disability has given me real power! Power no one will ever take from me!”
Although the star student was basking in his moment, some people pointed out his misspelled word in the tweet. However, that didn’t stop LeBron James from showing him love. The Los Angeles Lakers player tweeted,
“YESSIR @TheRealJRSmith!! Proud of you, Kid!!! Love bro.” J.R. responded, “Let me know if you still want to play College Football, we still got time!!!! #ItsNeverToLate.”

J.R. proves you can excel at any age and that it’s never too late to pursue higher education. Last December, he opened up about his 4.0 GPA, tweeting, “I can’t even describe the feeling, I ain’t even gonna lie to you. I ain’t gonna lie. A lot of hard work went into that s— you know. Monday through Friday, eight to eleven, sometimes longer, straight schoolwork. When you’re not used to going to school and doing all that s—, ahh man. Freshman year, you don’t think you can do it. You always hear about your disabilities. This is how you start your day. Damn Hard Work Pays Off.”
Congrats J.R.!
