No One Wants To “Steal”Our Look: Model, Chantelle Winnie, Speaks Out On Cultural Misappropriation

Toronto’s very own, Chantelle Winnie aka Winnie Harlow, has changed the face of fashion as a model who isn’t afraid to show the world that she has vitiligo.

For those who don’t know, vitiligo is a chronic skin condition that causes the loss of skin color in blotches and patches.

Making her beginning on America’s Next Top Model after meeting Tyra Banks, Harlow talked about being called a “cow” by people who fully didn’t understand her disease but ironically now people in the fashion world are trying to replicate her very image!

Unfortunately the idea of white women putting on “black face” for fashion it isn’t sitting well with a lot of people.

In a recent Instagram post, Harlow responds to this specific tweet and but takes a different stance on the issue.

“My response to this is probably not what a lot of people want but here it goes: everytime someone wants fuller lips, or a bigger bum, or curly hair, or braids does Not mean our culture is being stolen. Have you ever stop to realize these things used to be ridiculed and now they’re loved and lusted over. No one wants to “steal”  our look. We’ve just stood so confidently in our own nappy hair and du-rags and big asses (or in this case, my skin) that now those who don’t have it love and lust after it.”
