Late Monday, news started to circulate that a documentary about the late and great Nipsey Hussle would be coming to Netflix, under the direction of Ava DuVernay. Nipsey Hussle’s team released a statement shortly after to announce that they are currently in negotiations, but a deal has not been finalized.
In the statement, they said, “Nipsey’s company Marathon Films, will present his feature film documentary executive produced by Roc Nation and his two children Emani and Kross Asghedom. No final deal has been inked.”
The statement continued, “We are currently in negotiations with Netflix for this project with Ava DuVernay, and her company ARRAY to co-produce. This documentary is very important to the family and will not be fast-tracked by monetary gain and/ or commercial interest.”
Deadline originally reported that a bidding war between streaming services had taken place as Netflix worked to acquire the rights to the film.
As many of you know Ava is no stranger when it comes to having her projects released on Netflix. Prior to releasing 2019’s “When They See Us,” she dropped her Academy Award-nominated documentary “13th” on the streaming service in 2016.
The news of the documentary comes almost one year after the shocking murder of Nipsey Hussle. On March 31, 2019, he was fatally shot outside of his Marathon Clothing store in Los Angeles.
Nipsey’s family, friends, and fans have been working to make sure that his legacy continues to live on forever and that the Marathon Continues.
