Following the release of the visual for his song Montero, Lil Nas X announced that he would be releasing custom Nike’s with a hint of human blood. According to Lil Nas X, the ‘Satan Shoes’ are being made in collaboration with streetwear company MSCHF, using one of Nike’s most infamous designs–the Air Max 97s.
Nike, however, must not have gotten the memo about the new kicks because the company has revealed that is has no involvement with Lil Nas X or his shoes. In a statement to NBC News, Nike denies having anything to do with the release.
“We do not have a relationship with Lil Nas X or MSCHF,” the statement says. “Nike did not design or release these shoes and we do not endorse them.”
Lil Nas X announced the release of the “Satan Shoes” over the weekend, noting that only 666 pairs would be sold. The sneakers have a pentagram pendant on them and are said to have a drop of human blood in each pair. Lil Nas X also detailed that they would be sold for $1,018 in reference to Luke 10:18, which speaks about Satan’s fall from heaven.
We aren’t sure whether or not Lil Nas X really planned to release these shoes, but it’s very possible that he was just trolling the folks who criticized his new video. Nevertheless, the sneaker announcement brought about various opinions about Nas’ religious views as well as his music.
Masika Kalysha took to Twitter to voice her opinion about the shoes, saying she came to Lil Nas X’s defense regarding his music video but she thinks he took things a little too far.
“Ok now Lil Nas X I was tellin’ people they need to chill but then you put out these demon shoes with human blood and that’s just disgusting and demonic and something we absolutely do not tf need,” she wrote. “Every check ain’t a good check. Human blood my nig? What in the absolute fk.”
