Nicki Minaj may be a noted sex symbol, but in a recent interview with Elle, she says she didn’t realize the impact she might have had on women and wants the ladies to know it’s “okay to keep your legs closed.”
Besides talking about her new album, which she says is going to be the best one out this year, and the power she feels being single, Nicki also talked about modern day sex work.
“Maybe I was naïve, but I didn’t realize how many girls were modern-day prostitutes,” she told the magazine. “Whether you’re a stripper, or whether you’re an Instagram girl—these girls are so beautiful and they have so much to offer. But I started finding out that you give them a couple thousand dollars, and you can have sex with them.”
“It’s just sad that they don’t know their worth. And it makes me sad that maybe I’ve contributed to that in some way,” she added.
Nicki also says she’s aware she sells sex appeal and doesn’t look down on women who are involved in sex work. She says she wants women to be more snobby about their sex appeal, because she told Elle “I’d rather you be called that than easy, and a ho, and a slut.”
