It’s one thing to secure the bag, but Atlanta Falcons wide receiver has just fumbled his. Calvin Ridley is trending on Twitter after the NFL announced he’s been suspended. According to reports from ESPN, the Falcons have decided to suspend Calvin indefinitely for at least the 2022 season after discovering he was gambling on games in 2021.
The NFL released a statement saying the baller gambled on games over a five-day stretch in November 2021 when he was out on a non-football injury list to address his mental health and get his personal life together. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell wrote a letter notifying Calvin of the suspension stating, “There is nothing more fundamental to the NFL’s success — and to the reputation of everyone associated with our league — than upholding the integrity of the game.”
The letter continued, “This is the responsibility of every player, coach, owner, game official, and anyone else employed in the league. Your actions put the integrity of the game at risk, threatened to damage public confidence in professional football, and potentially undermined the reputations of your fellow players throughout the NFL.” Calvin cleared the air on Twitter following the announcement, denying any addiction to gambling. In a series of tweets, he wrote, “I bet $1500 total. I don’t have a gambling problem. I couldn’t even watch football at that point. Just gone be more healthy when I come back.”
Calvin ended his rant by acknowledging he was wrong and that, “If you know me, you know my character.”
During an investigation, the NFL uncovered no evidence that the running back used inside information or “that any game was compromised in any way.” Calvin can apply for reinstatement on Feb. 15, 2023, and can appeal the suspension by filing notice within three days, per the collective bargaining agreement.
