New York Gov. Announces He’ll Give Paroled Felons The Right To Vote Through Executive Order

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) is about to make some major changes #Roommates! On Wednesday, he announced that he will sign an executive order that gives paroled felons a chance to vote again.

According to The Hill, the move comes after the New York Legislature shot down the measure. “I’m going to make it law by executive order,” Cuomo said at the National Action Network’s annual conference.

“In this state, when you’re released from prison and you’re on parole, you still don’t have the right to vote,” Cuomo said. “Now how can that be? You did your time. You paid your debt. You’re released, but you still don’t have a right to vote.”

The order will give over 36,000 parolees a chance to have their voice heard.

The governor said this was a necessary move because the Republican-led Senate was against passing a law that gives parolees who’ve did their time their voting rights back.
