There has been a lot of talk about the minimum wage slowly getting increased in different parts of the Country.
First we saw Los Angeles, San Francisco, Oakland, Berkeley, and Seattle proclaim that they were going to raise the minimum wage. Now, New York State has joined in.
New York State has just approved the minimum wage for fast food workers to eventually go from its current rate of $8.75, to $15 an hour!
All the folks at McDonalds, hold on tight your raise is on the way!
The raise increase for fast food workers is going to be a gradual one. It will take about 3 years to accomplish for New York City workers, and about 6 years for workers in other parts of the State.
Fast food workers were pushing for this raise for a while now and felt that they were the lowest paid workers in the workforce.
Everyone isn’t so happy with the increase though. Many franchise owners think the increase will give mom and pop stores an unfair advantage, since they don’t have to raise their wages.
Also, some franchise owners may have to increase prices, be forced out of business, or even forced to cut employees because of high costs.
There seems to be good and bad points that come with raising the minimum wage.
What are your thoughts?
