Roommates, a brand new teaser trailer for the upcoming Aretha Franklin biopic “Respect” starring Jennifer Hudson just dropped! The movie set to hit theaters this December with Jennifer Hudson in the title role as the Queen of Soul—and by the looks of it, J-Hud could possibly be getting another Oscar on her mantle.
The first teaser trailer for the Aretha Franklin biopic, “Respect” has finally arrived, following a very brief teaser that dropped late last year. In this new exclusive look, we get to see a bit more of Jennifer Hudson as she embodies the legendary Queen of Soul—along with glimpses of co-stars Marlon Wayans, Mary J. Blige and Forest Whitaker.
“Respect” was originally set for an October 2020 release, but then the coronavirus pandemic happened and now it is scheduled for Christmas Day. As the very first authorized feature film based on Franklin’s life, it’s directed by Liesl Tommy and written by Tracey Scott Wilson. You may also recall that Aretha Franklin hand-picked Jennifer Hudson to play her before her death back in 2018 and was also apart of the film’s production until then.
Forest Whitaker stars as Reverend C.L. Franklin, Aretha’s father and pastor of New Bethel Baptist Church in Detroit, Michigan. Marlon Wayans stars as Ted White, Aretha’s first husband, who she suffered physical abuse from during their brief marriage.
Additionally, Mary J. Blige plays legendary singer Dinah Washington and “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” star Titus Burgess plays Reverend Dr. James Cleveland, who was known as the “King of Gospel.” “Respect” is already considered an Academy Award front-runner, with Jennifer Hudson said to possibly receive another Oscar for her portrayal.
