Roommates, this story right here is a lot to unpack! According to Washington Post a Newark high school in New Jersey suspended 4 members of a their boys junior varsity basketball team after a video of the kids beating down their basketball coach went viral!
Four players from Malcolm X Shabazz High School were caught on tape pushing, punching and kicking the basketball coach after losing a game at another school. Newark Mayor, Ras J. Baraka met with the school’s Superintendent and principal to discuss the attack, saying this in a statement: “The actions of these students will not be tolerated and they don’t represent the majority of the school,” Baraka said in a statement. “The school and team have many great kids, who go on to college and do great things, and we’re proud of them. We support the superintendent and principal and will do whatever we can to make the rest of the year successful.”
It seems, the coach was actually trying to stop the players from going after another student and unfortunately ended up getting the brunt of the beatdown. The school isn’t taking these students actins lightly at all! Police are currently investigating what allegedly went down and have already stated that “those found to have participated in this senseless act of violence will face criminal charges.”
The video of the altercation has since gone viral on twitter. See tweet below:
Many people have taken to social media to express their outrage. Clearly, school just isn’t what it use to be! There’s no word on who the students are as they are minors, but needless to say a decision like this will impact their foreseeable future!
The coach seen in the video getting beaten up by his players has yet to make a statement about what happened to the public. We’re hoping he didn’t sustain many injuries, we’ll be sure to keep you up on this tea Roommates!
