Hollywood is yet again reportedly rebooting another classic, but I have a feeling there will be some mixed reactions to this one. Deadline reports that #WarnerBros is rebooting “New Jack City” with Snowfall’s Malcolm Mays writing the script.
The original film was released in 1991 and had an all-star cast including Wesley Snipes, Ice T, Chris Rock, Flavor Flav, and Mario Van Peebles. It isn’t immediately clear if any of the movie’s original actors have signed onto the project, or for that matter, approved of this remake.
While there is no director attached to the new “New Jack City,” the movie will reportedly be produced by original producer Doug McHenry who will be working alongside “A Star Is Born” producer, Bill Gerber.
Before y’all get on Mays for touching the Cash Money Brothers, y’all might want to put some respect on his name because he’s been putting in work!
Mays recently wrote for Warner Bros’ “Ferguson,” which is an adaptation of the book “Tell the Truth & Shame the Devil: The Life, Legacy and Love of My Son Michael Brown” by Lezley McSpadden.
Mays is also set to direct and produce the feature “Flint” for Overbrook Entertainment. “Flint” stars John Ortiz and T.I. and is described as “a modern-day ‘Chinatown’ set against the Flint, MI water crisis in which a converted ex-con who’s found peace in the Tao finds himself embroiled in a murder mystery set upon by his ex-lover and young mentee that unravels the fabric of the water crisis afflicting the community in which he grew up.”
In addition, Mays played Kevin Hamilton for two seasons on FX’s “Snowfall.” He also starred in Antoine Fuqua’s boxing movie “Southpaw”, and the Cuba Gooding Jr., Dennis Haysbert film “Life of a King.”
With that said, we dare to ask, are you here for a “New Jack City” reboot? Let us know!
