There’s a group of people in California who are lobbying to become the 51st state in the U.S. Per its Declaration of Independence, this movement calls for “a free and Independent State” with “full power to establish and maintain law and order, to promote general prosperity.”
Supporters of “New California” believe that California is “ungovernable” due to declining healthcare and high taxes. Founder Robert Paul Preston told reporters, “Well, it’s been ungovernable for a long time. High taxes, education, you name it, and we’re rated around 48th or 50th from a business climate and standpoint in California.”
New California would be made up mostly of rural counties and regular California would have the urban coastal cities like Los Angeles and San Francisco. Co-founder Tom Reed says that they are working with state legislatures to get this done and are doing everything by the book! “We have to demonstrate that we can govern ourselves before we are allowed to govern,” he said.
They say that they will be ready to move forward with state legislatures within the next 18 months. Roommates, what are your thoughts about a Cal-Exit?!
