While everyone was out here enjoying the launch of Disney’s new Disney+ streaming service, Netflix had pulled up to the chat with some tricks up their sleeves. On Wednesday, the streaming service announced their new deal with Nickelodeon, which will allow them to create and produce original animated feature films and TV series based on both new and existing IP.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, this deal expands Netflix and Nickelodeon’s deal, which was revived a few years back for a live-action series for “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” as well as deals for “Rocko’s Modern Life,” “Invader Zim,” “The Loud House,” “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” and others.
Nickelodeon president Robbins said, “Nickelodeon’s next step forward is to keep expanding beyond linear platforms, and our broader content partnership with Netflix is a key path toward that goal. The Nickelodeon Animation Studio is home to the world-class artists and storytellers behind some of the most iconic characters and shows ever made, and our head of animation, Ramsey Naito, has been building on that legacy over the past year by ramping up development and production exponentially. The ideas and work at our studio are flowing, and we can’t wait to work with Melissa and the Netflix team on a premium slate of original animated content for kids and families around the world.”
According to The New York Times, the deal reportedly includes a music-based project centered on Squidward, from the classic show “SpongeBob SquarePants.”
As we previously reported, the release of Disney’s new streaming service has been met with a lot of success, as it has been revealed that they have already reached 10 million sign-ups since its launch.
Netflix’s and Nickelodeon’s new deal already has social media declaring a war between the streaming services as they provide us with nostalgic feels. Check it out, and see what people are saying below.
