Mya is opening up about being celibate for seven years and sharing how it’s impacted her life.
The singer recently appeared as a guest on ‘Way Up With Angela Yee’ in an episode published via YouTube on July 25. About 22 minutes into her interview, Mya explained that in addition to adopting a vegan lifestyle, she’s also given up alcohol and engaging in sexual activity in order to lead a more healthy life.
The singer went on to explain that celibacy gave her “mental clarity” and the ability to do “without.”
“It shifted my mindset. It was no longer a focus,” she said. “The rush to be in a relationship, the rush to be married, the rush to… be in something because that’s what you’re taught to do — to have kids or procreate.”
The singer explained that she feels “there’s a lot of pressure on women to be able to do that.”
“Why are we taught we have to be taken or made an honest woman?” she asked.
As the conversation continued, Mya explained that she believes “love is beautiful.” However, individuals must first love themselves.
“Love is beautiful, and I think the world always needs more of it, but I think you must start with yourself,” she said. “And I have to start with self always, versus expecting from other sources.”
Mya ultimately explained that the process of celibacy “recondition[ed]” her mindset.
“It was just reconditioning. It’s something that was necessary, because it’s a very spiritual thing,” she said. “You must be very selective if you want better results. That self-accountability started with me by shutting that part of my life off.”
As The Shade Room previously reported, Mya recently made headlines earlier this month. Last week, the 44-year-old went viral after performing at the “Queens of R&B” tour stop, headlined by Xscape and SWV, in New York City.
During her performance, Mya surprised concertgoers by bringing out fellow singer Sisqo. The pair performed their 1998 hit single ‘All About Me.’
