MTV VMAs 2024 Nominations: Sexyy Red, Tyla, And Victoria Monét Among 29 First-Time Nominees

With a little over a month until the 2024 Video Music Awards (VMAs), MTV has released its nominations.

Taylor Swift came in hot, leading the list with 10 nominations—eight for her ‘Fortnight’ music video alone and two in the Artist of the Year and Best Pop categories. Post Malone came in second with nine nominations. He collected eight from his collaboration with Swift on ‘Fort Night,’ and the ninth is a nod to his country hit ‘I Had Some Help,’ featuring Morgan Wallen.

More notable, though, is this year’s 29 first-time nominees.

First-Time VMAs Nominees: Sexyy Red, Tyla, Victoria Monét & More

For context, the 2024 MTV VMAs will air live on Sept. 10 at 8 p.m. ET. MTV will host the annual event at the UBS Arena on Long Island, New York.

Now, about these first-timers on the VMA scene, starting with Sexyy Red. The St. Louis rapper took off at the top of last year with ‘Pound Town’ and has remained in rotation with other hits like ‘Bow Bow Bow,’ ‘U My Everything’ and ‘Looking For The H*es.’

Now, she has a chance to win up to two Video Music Awards in the categories. She’s nominated for ‘Best Collaboration’ and ‘Best Hip Hop,’ alongside Drake and SZA for ‘Rich Baby Daddy.’ Neither Drake nor SZA are first-timers, and he is only nominated for the two actors mentioned. However, SZA racked in five nominations this year, with the three additional ones being ‘Video Of The Year,’ ‘Artist of the Year,’ and ‘Best R&B.’

First-timer and South African artist Tyla became an international sensation in 2023 with the release of ‘Water.’ The track dominated social media, with thousands attempting to recreate the waistline moves she paired with the song. She has three opportunities to win at this year’s VMAs, including in the following categories: ‘Best New Artist,’ ‘Best R&B,’ and ‘Best Afrobeats.’

Meanwhile, despite more than a decade of making music, this year is the first time Victoria Monét is getting recognition from the VMAs. She secured two nominations for ‘PUSH Performance of the Year’ and ‘Best R&B.’
