Twenty-six years after unveiling “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly),” Missy Elliott is sharing a couple of “fun fact[s]” about the iconic puffed-up outfit that she rocked in the song’s music video.
On Thursday (Aug. 10), Rolling Stone hailed the 1997 bop as the greatest hip-hop video of all time. Notably, this honor came just in time for the genre’s 50th birthday on Aug. 11, 2023.
In light of the honor, Missy quote tweeted a post about it and added a lil’ story that involved her walking through Brooklyn while donning the getup.
Specifically, Missy Elliott noted that she had to walk to a gas station “to get air in this blow-up suit.” However, the outfit “blew up so big” that she couldn’t get into the vehicle, so she had to stir up a solution.
“The suit blew up so big I couldn’t fit in the car so I had to walk back to set down the street in this outfit in BROOKLYN.”
She humorously added that bystanders must have thought she was under the influence at the time.
“Dem ppl was riding pass like she must be high.”
Missy’s story didn’t end there, as she added that all her walking resulted in the suit deflating a bit.
“If you look at the music video it had deflated by the time I got back to set so [in] some scenes the suit [was] flat after all that walking.”
While these scenes theoretically could have been edited out or reshot, Missy noted that they “kept the scenes where the suit was deflated,” which was “so hood.” After all, they were “on a budget!”
Missy’s insight behind her “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)” getup comes about three months after she made history by becoming the first female rapper to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, as The Shade Room previously reported.
In response to this news, Missy Elliot wrote, “I want to say this is HUGE not for just me but all my Sisters in HIPHOP this door is now OPEN to showcase the hard work & what many of us contribute to MUSIC.”
