D’vontaye Mitchell was allegedly having a mental breakdown when he ran into the Hyatt Regency Milwaukee on June 30.
Instead of receiving aid, footage reportedly shows security and hotel staff “punching,” “dragging,” and restraining Mitchell. The ordeal reportedly left the 43-year-old unable to breathe.
Four employees are now facing felony murder charges, which reportedly carry a sentence of up to 15 years. However, Mitchell’s family is advocating for murder charges that carry a life sentence.
Now, The Shade Room’s Justin Carter is delving into what happened to D’vontaye Mitchell amid his family’s call for justice on ‘TSR Investigates.’
What Happened To D’vontaye Mitchell?
According to Carter, the hotel staff reportedly believed Mitchell was panhandling on the hotel’s property. A security guard allegedly asked the 43-year-old to leave. However, Mitchell allegedly ran inside the hotel to a gift shop and allegedly “tried to lock himself in a women’s bathroom.”
At that point, Mitchell’s family alleges that the ordeal escalated unnecessarily.
“I haven’t gotten any sleep,” DeAsia Harmon, Mitchell’s wife, reportedly explained at a press conference. “These people are on camera taking my husband’s life.”
Footage reviewed by The Shade Room shows off-duty security guard Brandon Turner pulling Mitchell out of the restroom and into the hotel lobby. At that point, a hotel guest appears to drag Mitchell outside. As other employees join the ordeal, one female employee is even seen grabbing a broom and hitting Mitchell.
At this time, neither the hotel guest nor the female employee has been charged in the incident.
The 43-Year-Old’s Family Speaks Out About The Hyatt Employees
According to Carter, the 43-year-old’s family have spoken out since the fatal incident. Nayisha Mitchell, D’vontaye’s sister, spoke exclusively with CBS Evening News.
“I just wish that a good handful of them would have intervened and helped my brother,” Nayisha explained.
Ultimately, the footage shows Mitchell being pinned on the ground by multiple employees. The ordeal resulted in the 43-year-old passing away from “restraint asphyxia and toxic effects of cocaine and methamphetamine,” per CNN.
