Today President Barack Obama announced the 21 recipients that will be receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
The medal is the country’s highest civilian honor and is awarded to those who have made tremendous contributions both inside and outside of their fields.
Among the recipients we have basketball legends, Kareem Abdul-Jaabar and Michael Jordan. Also receiving a medal is the original diva herself, Diana Ross and legendary actress Cicely Tyson.
President Obama said in a statement, “The Presidential Medal of Freedom is not just our nation’s highest civilian honor – it’s a tribute to the idea that all of us, no matter where we come from, have the opportunity to change this country for the better. From scientists, philanthropists, and public servants to activists, athletes, and artists, these 21 individuals have helped push America forward, inspiring millions of people around the world along the way.”
Other well-known names in Hollywood to be honored will be Ellen DeGeneres, Robert De Niro, Tom Hanks and others.
The award ceremony will take place at the White House on November 22nd.
