Michael Jordan Donates $5 Million To The National Museum Of African American History

Michael Jordan is definitely giving back in a major way by donating $5 million to the National Museum of African American History.

We last heard from the legendary NBA player when he broke his silence and released a statement calling for peace following the shootings of Alton Sterling, Philando Castile and the police in Dallas.

The multi-million dollar donation was announced on Monday, according to the Associated Press. His donation is the largest amount of money ever given by an athlete. It will benefit the exhibit that analyzes “how sports were used to break barriers as a way to gain full participation in American society.”

A section of the sports gallery will also be named after Jordan.

He said in a statement, “ I am grateful for the opportunity to support this museum. I also am indebted to the historic contributions of community leaders and athletes such as Jesse Owens, whose talent, commitment and perseverance broke racial barriers and laid the groundwork for the successful careers of so many African Americans in athletics and beyond.”

The museum which holds more than 36,000 artifacts has been labeled as the only national museum devoted exclusively to the documentation of African American life, history, and culture.”

The National Museum of African American History opens on September 24th at the Smithsonian in Washington D.C.
