Roomies, when it comes to the fight for justice, everyone, especially right now, is using their platforms to speak out. This includes activists, celebrities, public figures, and regular folks like me. When it comes to someone who has a history of fighting for criminal reform, Meek Mill he has continued to stand ten toes down on the issue. In December, he tweeted in agreement with organization Justice Forward VA to help them in their fight to end mass supervision and prison time for technical violations. It seems like their hard work has paid off!
According to reports from The Source, VA has enacted a new law, “HB 2038″, which will significantly decrease the state’s probation population, positively increase recidivism, remove wasteful spending, and help supervision become more effective and efficient! This was a combined effort from several organizations including; Justice Forward VA, American Conservative Union, Faith and Freedom, and The REFORM Alliance. Meek Mill and Michael Rubin serve as Co-Chairs.
The new law will be going into full effect on July 1st. It will place a cap on probation terms by limiting adult probation sentences to a maximum of one year for misdemeanor offenses and five years for felonies. In addition, HB 2038 will provide relief to individuals on probation to relieve them from technicatlities that exist such as, missing a meeting with a probation officer, and failing to report a traffic ticket to the probation officer. The new law will alleviate technical probation violations to prevent people from being re-incarcerated for a first technical probation violation.
REFORM CEO Robert Rooks said in a statement, “This legislation is a meaningful step forward toward building better pathways for Virginians stuck in the probation trap, and sets a positive example for what can be done in other states across the country.” He continued,
“We’re thankful for the support behind HB 2038 that will reunite families, prevent unnecessary incarcerations, and give life back to thousands of Virginians.”
