#Roommates, get ready to dive deep into the life of the Queen of Hip Hop Soul herself, Mary J. Blige, because a new documentary about her is currently in the works from a collaboration with Amazon Studios and eOne.
Fresh off celebrating the 25th anniversary of her career-defining, ground-breaking sophomore album “My Life,” Mary J. Blige has another major reason to celebrate these days. @Deadline reports that Academy Award-winning filmmaker Vanessa Roth is currently producing an as-yet-untitled documentary about the life and career of our beloved MJB.
The project is said to chronicle Mary’s life in the music industry and reflecting the emotional journey it took to make her one of the most iconic artists in R&B history. The documentary will also center around Mary’s past struggles with poverty, abuse, addiction and heartbreak while at the same time following her on a special concert tour to perform “My Life”, to commemorate its 25th anniversary.
Matt Newman, Co-Head of Movies at Amazon Studios had this to say about the upcoming project:
“We all know Mary J. Blige as the two-time Oscar nominee, Grammy Award winning, multi-hyphenate who has sold over 80 million records. But through this documentary, audiences will see a raw and honest side of Mary J. Blige opening up about her personal journey of redemption and healing. We are thrilled to share with our worldwide Prime Video customers this exclusive, never-before-seen, inside look into the global legend, Mary J. Blige.”
Tara Long, President of eOne’s Global Unscripted Television shared similar feelings about Mary J. Blige and the documentary:
“I have long admired Mary as an artist, an icon, and a strong, fearless woman. The story of her life has inspired us enormously and we are thrilled to be making this project with her and her team, Ashaunna and Nicole. Mary’s album “My Life” is both iconic and tremendously impactful, we hope that by bringing it to screens we can continue to inspire audiences around the world as her music has done for decades.”
Mary will serve as an executive producer on the documentary, but currently no release date has been announced. To tide you over until it drops, you can look forward to seeing her starring in the first “Power” spinoff due next year.
