With all that’s going on, a new documentary on singer and songwriter Marvin Gaye seems to be needed more than ever.
According to Variety, a new documentary centered on the late singers critically acclaimed 1971 album, “What’s Going On?” is currently in the works. This film in particular is special because it has the involvement of Gaye’s children, Nona, Marvin III and Frankie Gaye, along with his ex-wife Janis Gaye.
The album was originally released during the time of the Vietnam War and the aftermath of the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., which caused Gaye to challenge America to take a closer look at everything that was going on.
We can definitely use another reality check in 2016! The producers of the film said in a statement, “The relevance of his masterpiece…is as strong as ever.”
The documentary is scheduled to film in Los Angeles, Detroit and Washington, with interviews from Motown’s most trailblazing artists. Along with never before seen footage of Gaye and his family.
Marvin Gaye’s children said in a joint statement, “Our father was complex, but we are confident that with Noah Media Group’s attention to detail and their dedication to the truth, the positive, inspirational and aspirational aspects of his life will be handled and shared with the world in a way never seen before. We look forward to participating and sharing what we can through friends, family, photos, footage and priceless stories that only those who knew our father up close and personal would know, as well as his contemporaries, purists and fans who have studied him and his art over decades.”
