Anything can have representation when it comes to inclusivity, even if it’s candy! As the times change, Mars, Incorporated, the company behind the colorful, candy-coated M&M’s is trending on Twitter after announcing the changes to its famous characters. They shared that they now have a modern makeover and more nuanced personalities.
According to The Hill, Mars, Incorporated announced today their global commitment to creating a world where everyone feels they belong and society is inclusive. The company states that part of the new mission is to increase the sense of belonging for 10 million people worldwide by 2025. One of the significant changes is with the green M&M. Previously, the mascot was seen in ads posing seductively and strutting in white go-go boots. Now the green M&M will sport a pair of sneakers. The M&M’s website has a new description for the green candy, saying she enjoys being a hype woman for her friends.
Also, on the site, the green M&M explained, “I think we all win when we see more women in leading roles, so I’m happy to take on the part of a supportive friend when they succeed.” Another noticeable change is for the brown M&M, as the mascot moves away from being bossy. The promotional website also says the mascot is “Not bossy. Just the boss.”
Mars has kept the M&M’s look the same since 1941 and felt like it was time for an updated tone of voice that is more inclusive, welcoming, and unifying while remaining rooted in our signature jester, wit, and humor.” Cathryn Sleight, MarsWrigley’s Chief Growth Officer, said in a statement, “As one of the world’s most iconic candy brands, who better to commit to a world with more moments of fun by increasing a sense of belonging around the globe than M&M’s.”
Roomies, do you think this was a good move?!
