#Roommates, Madonna is doing her part to make sure kids in Malawi grow up with proper health facilities. The opening ceremony for Mercy James Institute for Pediatric Surgery took place yesterday and was considered a family affair.
Madonna, who has always been very open about her adopted children, actually named the hospital after her daughter Mercy James. According to CNN, the institute is the first center of it’s kind in the African country and was funded by a charity she started back in 2006 called “Raising Malawi.” She started the foundation the same year she adopted her son David Banda, who is now 11 from the same country. Since adopting Mercy James and David Banda, she also added twins Esther and Stella to her growing family earlier this year.
During the ceremony, Madonna’s daughter Mercy gave a brief speech saying: “It’s a great honor to know this hospital is named after me. But what’s more important is that we may help many kids and save many lives.”
The state of the art facility is located in Blantyre, Malwai and also has a playroom, outdoor play structure and inspirational murals Madonna curated herself.
