While some people spent the Fourth of July celebrating so-called “freedom,” others called out Macy Gray & actress Bette Midler. Both women have become labeled as “Terfs” following recent comments about Trans women. A Terf is described as a feminist who excludes the rights of transgender women from their advocacy of women’s rights.
The conversation started following a recent interview with Piers Morgan. Macy said, “I will say this, and everyone’s gonna hate me, but as a woman, just because you change your (body) parts doesn’t make you a woman, sorry.” Piers asked, “Right, you feel that?” Macy doubled down, saying, “I know that for a fact.”
Possibly feeling that backlash was on the horizon, the singer also told Piers that she doesn’t think anyone should be labeled transphobic just because they disagree. Macy wasn’t the only one who shared their opinions on women. Actress Bette Midler hopped on Twitter and shared her two cents in a tweet.
She wrote, “WOMEN OF THE WORLD! We are being stripped of our rights over our bodies, our lives, and even of our name! They don’t call us ‘women’ anymore; they call us ‘birthing people’ or ‘menstruators, and even people with vaginas’! Don’t let them erase you! Every human on earth owes you!”
Over 10,000 Roommates commented, and most felt Macy wasn’t wrong. However, the folks on Twitter dragged her. One tweeted, “Everything going on in the world right now, and Macy Gray decides to use her platform to instead call out people who are already oppressed and attempt to invalidate them.”
Another tweeted, “Macy Gray is so desperate for a coin she’s appearing on Piers Morgan and singing weddings on ‘Real Housewives’ episodes. No wonder she’s mad! Terf a*s.”
Roommates, what are your thoughts on Bette & Macy’s comments?
