Los Angeles City Council Officially Changes Columbus Day To ‘Indigenous Peoples Day’

#Roommates, the Los Angeles City Council decided it was time to say goodbye to Christopher Columbus Day, and recently voted to change the name to Indigenous Peoples Day.

The proposal was originally introduced back in November 2015 by Councilman Mitch O’Farrell, who spoke out about “Columbus’ legacy of extreme violence, enslavement and brutality” and “the suffering, destruction of cultures, and subjugation of Los Angeles’ original indigenous people, who were here thousands of years before anyone else.”

According to The Grio, it seemed like everyone was on the same page because the council voted 14-1 on the measure.

The holiday would pay homage to the indigenous people who lived in America first!
