Will Smith and Jay Z are joining forces and executive producing an untitled miniseries about Emmitt Till for HBO. In a country of such a racial divide this announcement couldn’t have came at a better time.
Although PBS produced a documentary in 2003 called The Murder of Emmitt Till and it investigated the whole situation, Jay and Will’s producer credits and influence are going to serve as a a major push for this mini series and hopefully offer an additional wave of being black in America and social injustice.
According to entertainment weekly, there are currently no writers attached to the miniseries. Roc Nation, Overbrook, and Kapital Entertainment are the production companies tied to the project.
The series is set to span six hours.
Hopefully you know who Emmett Till is but if you don’t …Emmett is the 14-year-old African-American teenager who was brutally murdered for “flirting” with a white woman in 1955. The woman’s husband and brother took Emmett to a barn, where they gouged out his eyes, shot him in the head, and finally disposing of his body on the Tallahatchie River. His body was found and retrieved three days following. His murderers were acquitted of his murder and later publicly admitted culpability after their trial. He would have been 74 today; July 25th.
