Ice Spice Recalls Being Imitated And Teased As A Child
Taking it back to her pre-fame days, the 23-year-old rapper started by recalling how she used to get bullied for “having a deeper voice than a lot of girls.”
She also shared that—years before she captivated fans with lines like “How could I lose when I’m already chose?”—she had boys at school imitating her, as they found her vibe to be “so funny.”
“Growing up, I remember having a deeper voice than a lot of girls, and boys would try to make fun of me. I remember being in school and people imitating me, trying to talk like me, or saying s**t that I would say and thinking it’s so funny.”
However, the artist noted that she eventually learned to use her humor “to [her] advantage.” As a result, she’s found herself in a career that values her uniqueness, which makes her “happy.”
“It was years of just hearing that and accepting it and then thinking it’s funny too, and then eventually using it to my advantage. I’m just happy I get to have a career based off how I sound and things I say.”

The Rapper Says She Made 'A New Lane' By Being Herself
Eventually, Ice Spice reached widespread success after releasing Munch in mid-2022, and she says that uncompromisingly staying true to herself is what got her to this point.
She proclaims that she’s started a “new lane” and notes, “I’m starting to hear a lot of other artists sound like they belong in my lane now.”
“I don’t know if I fit in. I think that’s what makes me so different. I feel like it’s a new lane that I’ve started, and I’m starting to hear a lot of other artists sound like they belong in my lane now.”
The New York rapper also attributes her success to staying focused on “having fun and being [herself]” rather than satisfying others’ expectations.
“I can’t really pick myself apart trying to figure out why people are interested in me. I just like to focus on having fun and being myself and thinking about what I want to do and not really what other people want me to do.”
She continued, noting that it’s crucial for people to “have their own motion instead of trying to rely on someone else’s motion.”
“I think it’s important to be yourself first before you try to be anybody else, at least for me. I think it’s important that people have their own motion instead of trying to rely on somebody else’s motion.”

Ice Spice Credits Her Father With Inspiring Her Artistry
As Ice paves her way while staying true to her own “motion,” she also credits her “underground rapper” father for inspiring her professional pursuits.
Specifically, the artist said the time spent with her father in the studio made an “impression” on her.
“He definitely inspired me to want to record. I remember being in the studio with him. I was a toddler, probably. And I remember little flashes. Of course, not every detail, but small things like that being shown to you at such a young age make an impression on you.”
She credits witnessing her father be an artist with inspiring her journey to become a rapper. Spice also shared that her dad stays “educating” her on hip-hop.
“Subconsciously, I ended up becoming an artist because I saw my father be one first. He’s a music lover himself. He’s a true hip-hop head, beyond me, honestly. He knows everything. He’s always educating me on hip-hop and s**t like that.”
