Lil Nas X is firing back at author Dr. Boyce Watkins for an inflammatory tweet he made about the rapper and his new music video for the song “Industry Baby.”
Lil Nas X dropped the record and visual for “Industry Baby” Thursday night. In the video–which was directed by Lil Nas himself– Lil Nas X is sentenced to prison behind the Nike Air Max drama related to his song “Montero.”
You can read more about that here.
Lil Nas X implied through his song and visuals that the ridicule over the controversial “devil shoes” really stems from people’s homophobia of him.
The video contained visuals including inmates in pink jail uniforms and a shower scene in which Nas X and his dancers are all naked.
Lil Nas X was praised for his marketing genius and for consistently being himself but of course Nas X had his critics and one of the most vocal ones was Dr. Boyce Watkins.
Watkins shared a very critical tweet about Lil Nas X’s video, asserting that he’s marketing “sexual irresponsibility” that’s causing young men to die from AIDS.
“#LilNasX isn’t fighting for gay rights. He’s marketing the sexual irresponsibility that’s causing young men to die from AIDS. Being gay is one thing, but being a super spreader is another. There’s nothing healthy or helpful about that video. Especially for children,” Dr. Boyce Watkins said.
In Lil Nas X’s defense, he warned parents ahead of the video’s release that it was not appropriate for children.
Lil Nas X fired back with a tweet, calling Watkins out for the hypocrisy in his statement.
“Ya’ll be silent as hell when n***as dedicate their entire music catalogue to rapping about sleeping with multiple women but when I do anything remotely sexual I’m ‘being sexually irresponsible’ & ‘causing more men to die from aids’ y’all hate gay ppl and don’t hide it.”
