Lil Nas X issued an apology on Tuesday (March 15) after social media users accused him of offending people who identify as transgender.
“Apologies to the trans community I def handled that situation with anger instead of considering why it was not cool. Much love to you guys. Sorry,” the Old Town Road artist tweeted.
A now-deleted tweet sparked the backlash. In the post, Lil Nas X shared a photo of a woman who resembles him. His caption said, “the surgery was a success,” with an added pink hearts emoticon.
But, six minutes after apologizing, the rapper returned to the hot seat for his dismissive response to a Black trans woman and artist named Edge Slayer. She had slammed Lil Nas X’s apology, asking him to repair the damage from his tweet in “material ways” instead.
“Baby this apology ain’t it! You need to apologize too the trans community in material ways that include money, sharing your platform to raise awareness and just keep it! This is fake as hell,” Edge Slayer tweeted at Nas.
He replied, “girl eat my a*s.” His tweeted response received over 8.8 million impressions in less than 24 hours after being published on Tuesday afternoon. Critics have deemed the response as dismissive and disrespectful, with some pledging to stop being fans.
When this article was published, Lil Nas X’s “eat my a*s” tweet was still posted to his Twitter page. Edge Slayer responded to it, asking Lil Nas X for a reason behind the clapback.
“Lol I don’t follow you so I didn’t see this! But lol baby I’m trans,” she tweeted. “Why are you dunking on me? I guess what I said struck a nerve because what’s this?”
Following her redirection of his apology, Edge Slayer says Nas’s fans began attacking her in the replies and DMs, including wishing death on her.
