LeBron James Wears a Safety Pin On Sports Illustrated Cover to Show Solidarity For Minorities, Women and Immigrants

#LeBronJames was named Sports Illustrated’s Sportsperson of the Year and has made quite the political statement on the cover. While some athletes chose to boycott the national anthem this year, James chose a more subtle approach to the madness by wearing a safety pin on his lapel. It’s a way to show support for minorities, women and immigrants who may have felt marginalized by Donald Trump over the last 18 months.

The basketball player endorsed Hillary Clinton for president, so he is clearly not a supporter of Trump. Still, James wants to continue on with his activism in order to let kids know that they are important no matter what people like Donald Trump may say. “I want it to be more about what I can do to help my community, what we can do so kids feel like they’re important to the growth of America, and not like: ‘These people don’t care about us,’” he said. “I’m not here to stomp on Trump. We’re here to do our part, which starts in the place we grew up, street by street, brick by brick, person by person.”

This is has been such a great year for LeBron. He led the Cleveland Cavaliers to their first NBA championship and is sending hundreds of kids to college with his own money. He definitely deserves Sportsman of the Year!
