With the coronavirus pandemic still very much present, some local government officials have ordered that some businesses are okay to open during this time. Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman has expressed how she wants businesses in the city to reopen as well.
On Wednesday, during a discussion with Anderson Cooper, Goodman expressed that she wanted to open the casinos, restaurants, and entertainment venues for business so people can get back to work.
Anderson Cooper questioned if she thought that would be a good idea seeing as how the virus is still very much active. Goodman gave some very contradicting statements that have many people giving her the side-eye at the moment.
When talking about the number of lives that have been lost since the pandemic hit, Goodman said, “Every one of those lives is a tragic loss, but when you count 150 versus 2.3 million, you have to say, ‘we have to open up.’”
Cooper then asked her, hasn’t it been because of social distancing that the numbers are where they are?
Goodman then responded, “How do you know until we have a control group? We offered to be a control group. Anybody that knows anything about statistics, knows, for instance, you have a vaccine….”
Cooper then interrupted to make sure he heard her correctly. “You’re offering the citizens of Las Vegas to be a controlled group to see if your theory on social distancing works, or doesn’t work,” asked Cooper.
She then denied the statement and asked him not to put words in her mouth, but then said in the same breath, “What I said was, I offered to be a controlled group, and I was told you can’t do that because people from all parts of Southern Nevada come into work in the city.”
When asked if she would be sitting on the casino floors if they were to open, Goodman responded, “What is the purpose of that? First of all, I have a family and I cook every meal every night, what are you doing?”
