Roommates, did you know that #KobeBryant wasn’t speaking to his parents for the past three years? After I tell you why, I’m sure you’ll understand his actions, because he says it wasn’t very easy to do. It all started back in 2013 when his parents tried to sell some of his high school memorabilia…with out is permission!
Speaking on the current status of his relationship with his parents, Bryant told #ESPN, “Our relationship is shit,” he said. “I say [to them], ‘I’m going to buy you a very nice home, and the response is ‘That’s not good enough’?” he says. “Then you’re selling my sh*t?”
That caused the basketball star to basically cut them off financially as well as his sisters. The decision was to help them to understand that they needed to be self-sufficient without their prized family member. He says his sisters Sharia and Shaya are “…very smart, college-educated [women]. I’m really proud of them. They were able to get their own jobs, get their own lives, take care of themselves. Now they have a better sense of self, of who they are as people, instead of being resentful because they were relying on me.”
Bryant added that it was very tough for him to make that decision but, “it’s something you have to do, something you have to be very strong about,” he says.
His parents, Joe and Pamela Bryant, had released a statement which reads:
“We regret our actions and statements related to the Kobe Bryant auction memorabilia. We apologize for any misunderstanding and unintended pain we may have caused our son and appreciate the financial support that he has provided to us over the years.”
