Kerry Washington is undeniably talented, with a plethora of successful movie and television roles under her belt. Debuting her acting chops in the cult classic movie, “Save The Last Dance” as ‘Chenille,’ the sassy friend of Julia Stiles’ character ‘Sara,’ Washington has maintained an impressive career for 20+ year.
Kerry Washington has played the lead in multiple roles, her most iconic being the highly intelligent and magnetic ‘Olivia Pope’ in ABC’s hit television series “Scandal.” For as popular and outstanding as Washington was in her role as Ms. Pope, most of us would think Ms. Washington would have several Emmys. In actuality, Washington was awarded her very first Emmy at the 2020 Creative Arts Emmy Awards, which is virtual this year.
Ironically, the Emmy win is due to her powerful performance behind the screen and not on it. Washington earned her first Emmy as a producer, taking home the win for “Best Variety Special (Live) as a producer of “Live in Front of a Studio Audience: ‘All in the Family’ and ‘Good Times.’
The live rendition of the two popular ‘70s sitcoms featured notable entertainers like Tiffany Haddish, Viola Davis, Woody Harrleson and more. Washington served as executive producer alongside late night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel, comedic legend Will Ferrell, and the television producer of the biggest 1970’s sitcoms, Norman Lear.
Currently, Kerry Washington is also nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie for her role in “Little Fires Everywhere,” a movie produced by her production company Simpson Street according to Los Angeles Magazine.
Washington has been completely humbled by the acknowledgment. Opening up in an interview with Los Angeles Magazine, Washington said “The experiences we’ve been able to have this year were beyond our wildest dreams: working with the legendary Norman Lear and Jimmy Kimmel to bring iconic shows from the ’70s to new audiences with Live in Front of a Studio Audience, to adapting American Son, a Broadway play about Black lives and police violence to Netflix, to bringing Celeste Ng’s beautiful novel Little Fires Everywhere to life with my incredible friends Reese Witherspoon, Lauren Neustadter and Liz Tigelar.”
I have been a Kerry Washington STAN since SAVE THE LAST DANCE, and I am happy she is finally getting what’s due.
