If walking away from what no longer serves you was a person…
Kenya Barris, creator of #Blackish, had a $100 million #Netflix deal on the table but decided to walk away from it.
In an interview with @thehollywoodreporter, the showrunner explained that he wanted to be edgy, and that Netflix wasn’t the platform for the type of projects he wants to create.
“I think a lot of people thought I got fired or I quit, like ‘f**k this,’ over some kind of beef with Netflix,”he stated. Barris continued, “I just don’t know that my voice is Netflix’s voice. The stuff I want to do is a little bit more edgy, a little more highbrow, a little more heady, and I think Netflix wants down the middle,” Kenya Barris stated.
Barris also stated that he “realized how much he’d missed the weekly megaphone of network television…He was taken, too, with the idea of having his work everywhere, and not confined to simply Netflix, where a single no would spell the end.”
As previously reported, the series writer and creator Kenya Barris recently took to social media to break the news that after its upcoming eighth season, ‘Black-ish’ will officially come to an end.
In an emotional and lengthy post on Instagram, Kenya Barris confirmed the ending of ‘Black-ish’ while also reminiscing about the impact the show has had throughout the years.
Kenya Barris said in part,“To ALL the people in the world I love, honor, respect and care for it is both exciting and bittersweet to share that black-ish has been RENEWED by ABC for it’s EIGHTH… and FINAL SEASON. In this day and age it is rare to get to decide when your show should come to an end, and we are grateful along with ABC to be able to make this final season exactly what we’d hoped for – and to do it with the entire and AMAZINGLY STELLAR cast coming back to close this chapter out with us the right way!”
Roomies, what do you think about this?
