Kentucky HBCU In Fear of Closing After Governor’s Proposed Budget Cuts

Kentucky State University president wrote in a newsletter this Monday that the 103-year old university “cannot withstand” deep budget cuts as proposed by Kentucky’s governor, Matt Bevin. “If the budget as proposed is enacted, our options would be to declare financial exigency and/or prepare a closure plan,” Burse continued.

WDRB reports that Governor Bevin has said that the state has no choice other than to pledge more money to its underfunded pension plans for public employees and to the growing cost of Medicaid. Should the budget be adopted by the Kentucky General Assembly, it will cut higher education funding by 9 percent over the course of two fiscal years. WDRB also writes that During this fiscal year, Governor Bevin wants colleges and universities to cut 4.5% from their state funding ending June 30th.

Bevin spokeswoman Jessica Ditto emailed WDRB, “Governor Bevin continues to discuss the issues surrounding the potential impacts of his budget proposal with all of the University presidents. President Burse has shared his concerns with the Governor and KSU’s tuition stabilization proposal is being evaluated within that broader context.”
Let’s hope that his proposal is rejected! We can’t lose our schools as it is up to us to educate our children!
