The students from the inaugural class at LeBron James’ I Promise School recently received one of the biggest opportunities when it comes to their education. On Wednesday, Kent State University announced that the students were gifted four years of college tuition. On top of that, they will also have a year of room and board paid for.
The special announcement was made when the students, who are now in the 11th grade, made a visit to the university, and they received the good news during a special ceremony.
Kent State University President Todd Diacon said to the students, “Most of all, we’re doing this because you guys have demonstrated over the past several years that you have the grit, you have the determination, you have the dreams to succeed.”
This amazing opportunity has become possible thanks to a partnership between Kent State and the LeBron James Family Foundation.
The university said in a statement, “The free tuition program was born out of an existing partnership between Kent State and the LJFF in which I PROMISE students attend summer enrichment college preparation programs at the university; those existing programs will continue.”
Interim Senior Vice President and Provost Melody Tankersley also spoke about the partnership and said, “We have already seen the impressive results that the I PROMISE Network is having on its participating students. We are so pleased that Kent State will become the next step in the educational journey of these amazing young people, and so happy that we can start them on their way to exciting careers and lives full of inspiration.”
